Serbia will not stop cooperation with Huawei

BELGRADE - Serbian Minister of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications Rasim Lajic told Radio Free Europe (RSE) that at this moment there is no need to discuss Serbia's cooperation with the Chinese telecom giant, Huawei, which the United States for alleged wiretapping and transmission of sensitive information to authorities in China.

"Huawei is one of the largest providers of telecommunications equipment in the EU countries, and by this time no country has even interrupted (co-operation) nor considered this possibility," Ljajić pointed out for the RSE.

In 2017, the Chinese company signed several agreements with Serbian ministries on the basis of the Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation in the field of infrastructure, signed by the governments of Serbia and China earlier.

One of the biggest partners of Huawei in Serbia is the state telecommunication company Telekom Srbija, Ljajić reminded.

"First of all, we are modernizing the fixed telephone network, but this is not the only partner to our telecommunication operator who works with Ericsson and Nokia and Cisco as well as with other companies in this field, and that will continue in the future," said Ljajic.
