TRIESTE – Chinese Ambassador Li Ruiyu has said that China is interested in reactivating a Trieste railway station in order to expand its trade reach into European markets.

“The port of Trieste is located near the northeastern border of Italy and constitutes an important access to the north of the Adriatic: a very favorable position. Since last year, the president of Assoporti and the president of Autorita’ di Sistema Portuale del Mare Adriatico Settentrionale (AdSP – Northern Adriatic Sea Port Authority), Zeno D’Agostino, has visited China twice. He met representatives of China Communications Construction and other Chinese companies, discussing port infrastructure and cooperation. China has in turn organized study missions at the port of Trieste”, said Li Ruiyu.

D’Agostino has suggested that the Aquilinia railway station could restart operations, in collaboration with the Ferrovie dello Stato, the national railway operator. Some finance is already in place and preparatory work could start already within the year.
